Germans & Jews

United States 2016 / Documentary / 76 minutes / Director: Janina Quint / Parental guidance

A valuable call for open dialogue

Germans and Jews, why can I only pronounce those words in English without it feeling unpleasant? At an extraordinary dinner party in Berlin, non-Jewish Germans and Jews living in Germany discuss their highly sensitive relationship with each other, now 70 years after the Holocaust. Today the fastest growing Jewish population in Europe lives in Berlin. This development was absolutely unimaginable in 1945, how could this have happened? Can a Jew ever feel at home in Germany? "Berlin is trendy and I feel much safer here than in Israel", says a Jewish musician. His table neighbour at the dinner party is asked, whether he is a proud German. "Yes, in a certain way", he answers, "but only because I feel connected to my country and my culture as a patriot of democracy and human rights". This creates a lively cultural exchange about the ongoing changes in Germany. Personalities such as the late Holocaust researcher Fritz Stern, the German-Jewish writer Rafael Seligman or the German rock musician Herbert Grönemeyer also have their say.

75 years after the end of the war  time for a change of perspective! In the documentary "Germans & Jews", non-Jewish Germans and Jews living in Germany discuss their highly sensitive relationship to one another. The result is a refreshingly open exchange about anti-Semitism and German guilt from today's perspective. It is also particularly valuable with regard to current right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic tendencies in Germany. At the same time uncomfortable and provocative, unexpected and revealing.
